Understanding Your Hand and Upper Extremity.

The musculoskeletal system is an intricately designed network of bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves that provides for function in our daily lives.  Our thoughts power nerves that create movement through this system.  The hand and upper extremity allows us to communicate with the world as we work, play, and perform our routine tasks.

Hand and Wrist

EVERYTHING HAND

From writing to teaching, hammering to drilling, fishing to sewing, the hand is the ultimate design in structure fitting function.  The hand connects to the forearm through the wrist and is motored by a series of nerves that communicate messaging from our thoughts to muscles and tendons.  Our bones provide structure and form.

Elbow

all things elbow

The elbow is a hinge joint, but also allows us to spin our wrist 180 degrees.  Ligaments provide stability and powerful muscles allow us curl our arm or push outward.

Shoulder

the most shoulder

Overhead motion is powered by our shoulders.  This is ball and socket joint; muscles wrap around the shoulder which allow us to elevate the arm to wave to our neighbors, shoot a basketball, or climb a ladder.
